Several shots from our collection of photos from turn of the century Tibet and South Asia depict simple scenes of life in the rural villages of the time.
Before posting from this archive, we always try to dig for a story behind the photo, something to give life to the people in them. With photos such as this one, the practically non-existent information makes this a difficult task.
We ended up searching the internet for “Tibetan women turn of the century”, which resulted in reading this excellent article in The Tibet Journal, written by Charlene Makley, discussing the way in which Tibetan women are portrayed in the media.
Charlene’s article is essential reading for those interested in feminism around the globe.
